The Ford tractor brand was founded in the United States in 1907 by Henry Ford, the same man who founded the Ford Motor Company.

In 1917, the Fordson tractor was introduced. It was a small, lightweight tractor that was designed to be affordable and easy to use.

During the 1920s, 75 percent of all tractors built in the United States were Fordsons. The tractors could also be used for hauling lumber, coal, brick and other material and sometimes even switching loaded freight cars, the removal of snow from sidewalks and many other industrial uses as well.

In 1928, Fordson tractor production was halted in the United States, only to be resurrected in 1939 as the Ford Model 9N. About that time, Henry Ford began to develop a working relationship with the late Harry Ferguson. The Ferguson-Sherman company, which made plow and tractor parts, marketed the Model 9N for sales distribution from 1939-1946. After the war, all production of the Ford Model 9N tractor was halted. In 1946, the relationship between Harry Ferguson and Ford Company severed.Debuting in July 1947, the 8N was an all-new machine with greater power and an improved drivetrain, a model for the small excavators of the time.

In the 1950s, Ford introduced the Ford N-Series tractors. The N-Series tractors were also the first to feature the iconic blue color that is still associated with Ford tractors today.Ford N Series Tractors were a series of farm tractors produced by Ford between 1939 and 1952, including 9N, 2N, and 8N models.

In 1955, Ford introduced a new line of tractors with five new models offered to the public in two power classes – 600 and 800 series. The models were called Ford's row-crop tractors and they were built to handle front-mounted equipment.

In early 1957, all Ford tractors models became available with factory installed LP gas engines in addition to the gasoline models.

Starting around 1961, the U.S. tractor operations and the Ford Ltd U.K. tractor operations, which had been substantially independent although always in close communication, were reorganized into closer integration. After 1964, all tractors made by the Ford companies worldwide carried the Ford brand.

In 1986, Ford expanded its tractor business when it purchased the Sperry-New Holland skid-steer loader and hay baler, hay tools and implement company from Sperry Corporation and formed Ford-New Holland which bought out Versatile tractors in 1988. In 1991 Ford sold its tractor division to Fiat with the agreement that they must stop using the Ford name by 2000. In 1999, Fiat removed all Ford identification from their blue tractors and renamed them "New Holland" tractors.

Now, New Holland tractors are gradually replacing Ford tractors.Although the company has gone through many changes over the years, and despite these changes, the Ford tractor brand remains a symbol of innovation, reliability and quality in the agricultural industry. In conclusion, Ford Motor Company has always had along and great history manufacturing tractors for the farm industry that will always be a part of Ford's great legacy and heritage.
